Where the numbers come from
AI adoption
The share of the working-age population that used generative AI tools in the period. Microsoft AI Economy Institute, AI Diffusion Report Q2 2026, published September 2026. The earlier points of each trend (H1 2025, H2 2025 and Q1 2026) come from the same series. For 36 countries without a figure of their own, the report pools neighbouring countries; the map and the ranking mark them as regional estimates.

Anthropic's AI Usage Index divides a country's share of Claude.ai use by its share of the world's working-age population. 1.0 means use in line with population, 2.0 twice as much. Anthropic Economic Index, data from May 2026, released June 26, 2026. The same release gives each country's share of all Claude.ai use.

United Arab Emirates, where 73.3% of the working-age population used AI in Q2 2026, according to Microsoft's AI Diffusion Report. It is followed by Singapore (64.3%) and Ireland (49.9%).
ChatGPT. In October 2026 it sent the most chatbot traffic in 129 of the 222 countries and territories StatCounter tracks. Gemini led in 79.
By volume, United States, with 20.2% of all Claude.ai use. Relative to its working-age population, Australia leads with a Claude usage index of 6.40.
The median measured country went from 12.5% of working-age people using AI in the first half of 2025 to 15.4% in Q2 2026. South Korea grew the most, adding 14.7 percentage points.
